The Cape Cod Young Professionals will host Cape Cod business owner and candidate for Governor, Christy Mihos, at their next business networking event on Thursday, October 26th at the Cape Codder Resort and Spa in Hyannis from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.

Open to young professionals and entrepreneurs on Cape Cod, the free event will feature hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, business networking and educational session.

Mr. Mihos will speak to the CCYP on a number of topics, including his candidacy for Governor and the important issues addressing Cape voters, the importance of being active in the political process – with the emphasis being on younger voters, what he sees as opportunities for younger professionals on the Cape, and a discussion of his approach to business on the Cape – specifically targeting entrepreneurs.

Hello All CCYP Members:
We have pushed the September event back to October; thus the event scheduled
for 9/14 at Gracies Table is no longer scheduled. We are looking at either
October 12th or 19th, for our next event, which will likely be in the
mid-Cape area and have a very exciting, prominent speaker.

We will also host an event on November 17th, a Friday evening, in
conjunction with Cape Business Magazines Business Connect conference at
the Cape Codder. There is a 30% discount available for CCYP members to the
conference and we will have a networking and social event that evening.

GOLF - POSTPONED

Unfortunately we have been forced to postpone the golf event this weekend, due to limited demand.

Many apologies to those of you who were interested and excited to play, we simply couldn’t generate enough interest to make it a viable event.

We will continue to make every effort to offer events, outings, and gatherings that suit the needs and desires of our membership; along those lines, if you should ever have suggestions or ideas, please pass them along – we’ve grown to the point we have because of the ideas, enthusiasm and energy of all of you, and we will continue to do so.

We hope to reschedule something for the fall, with a similar theme and location, and will keep you posted on any progress we make there.

We are getting a lackluster response for the golf and social event this weekend. During the initial survey there were a lot of people interested in participating, and we have few RSVP’s to date. August 19th Golf Event

Where: Kings Way – Yarmouth Port, MA

When: All Day Access to the Pool & Tennis Courts

We have finalized plans with King’s Way and are eagerly anticipating what we hope will be the first of many golf and sports related CCYP events.

This event will be at King’s Way in Yarmouth Port (http://www.kingswaygolfinc.com/index.html), on Saturday, August 19^th, and tee-times will begin at 2pm. At 4pm we will begin a cookout on the deck at Ardeo’s, which is attached to the clubhouse.

The charge for 9 holes of golf is $40, which includes food at the cookout following the event.

For those of you who want to come enjoy the pool and tennis facilities, there is no charge; however there is a $10 charge for the cookout.

I look forward to hearing from a lot of people and this should be a really fun event for the whole family.

If you are golfing you are more than welcome to enter a foursome, or multiple players you want to play with, otherwise we will draw up foursomes as required. There will be some type of competitive format and some prizes for teams and individuals, though we recognize the primary function of this event is to get a lot of people golfing and have a great time.

We are still looking for some sponsors; if you are interested in sponsoring the event please contact me ASAP.

We are planning a golf event for Saturday August 19^th, tee times beginning at 1pm at King’s Way in Yarmouth Port. In addition to golf there will be a pool available for non-golfers and children, as well as some tennis courts available for those who would like to play tennis. Following the golf we will have a cookout on the property and have plenty of time to hang out and enjoy what we hope will be terrific weather.

What we are looking for now is some sense of who is interested in participating. I would appreciate a quick reply from those of you who want to play golf, any guest you expect to bring who will or will not golf, and also any companies represented who would be interested in sponsoring some of the event.

The staff of King’s Way has been gracious enough to offer their facility to us at an attractive rate and we look forward to an incredible afternoon of golf, food, water, and fun.

Cape Cod Young Professionals: An Idea Who’s Time Has Come

Cape Cod has long had a reputation as a sleepy retirement community that seasonal visitors flock to for our beautiful natural surroundings and historical attractions. However, as a new wave of entrepreneurs and workers have settled on the Cape it has taken on a much more vibrant year round economy. Within that economy are hundreds of young professionals looking to carve out successful careers in beautiful surroundings, and match professional success with a deep sense of community and belonging.

As two young professionals on the Cape we had a strong sense of professional fulfillment, but often found ourselves isolated from other young people in an area that is dominated by an older workforce. As we began to discuss our lives we were struck by how similar they were, and how much we wanted to connect to others on Cape Cod who shared our experiences.

Thus the Cape Cod Young Professionals was born; a grassroots organization seeking to connect the young professionals on the Cape and provide a forum for networking and social interaction. Primarily consisting of networking events, we are also looking to how we can collectively give back to a community that offers so much. The opportunity for us to expand into philanthropic endeavors is tremendous, and it seems a natural way to leverage the power and enthusiasm that the group is developing.

The group has grown from the two of us to include a diverse set of professionals on Cape, with a mailing list that now numbers over 60. People come for different reasons, but all share an enthusiasm and energy for their futures on Cape Cod that bodes well for the long-term retention of a younger workforce.

“I hear so often that there isn’t any money to be made on Cape Cod,” says Erin Madden, a Sales Associate with Cape Cod.com. “But I don’t want to believe that I have to move away to be successful. Meeting fulfilled and successful people in the Cape Cod business community inspires me to keep that attitude.”

We have attracted a broad range of people to the group and look forward to continue growing through the coming months and years. From entrepreneurs to technology workers, to individuals like us who are continuing the strong legacy of family owned businesses in our communities, they have all shown up in force and are excited about the prospect of meeting other young professionals in the area. “Meeting and networking with other young professionals on Cape Cod is fantastic,” continues Madden, “it’s given me a renewed optimism in living and working on Cape Cod.”

Not that life on the Cape for young people is not without its challenges; housing being tops on the list of issues people are concerned about. “My only concern is that with this movement of our parents, the cost of living for a young professional is going to get even more out of control,” said Larry Brutti, a Client Relationship Manager with Shepherd & Goldstein, LLP. Brutti is concerned with the shift of the mature urban population to retirement areas such as Cape Cod, putting an increasing strain on an already difficult housing market.

Though there is concern about the shifting population, there is also opportunity; “as a whole, because of the population growth and more people living here year round, the economic future of Cape Cod looks to be secure,” commented Cliff Johnston, a Programmer with Excel Corporation of Hyannis who is married and expecting his first child in May. “They are learning,” says Brutti referring to the new full-time residents and retirees, “that the professionals on the Cape are just as qualified and more times than not, they are receiving better services and more value for their money.”

With the challenges, opportunities and beauty that Cape Cod provides, there are more people eager to call it their professional home, as well as their personal. Cape Cod Young Professionals sits at the crossroads of the professional and personal life balance; providing a unique forum for young people to collaborate and develop lasting relationships, while also discussing the unique issues and challenges facing the Cape Cod economy as a whole. With many of us looking to call Cape Cod home for life, it is a great opportunity to get to know each other and understand how the Cape business leaders of tomorrow view the prospects for our future.

“We do face some challenges and we can relate to each other on that level,” says Madden. “I know that by participating I will make friends and I hope to forge mutually beneficial business relationships.” And that’s what it’s about for the Cape Cod Young Professionals; a small community of young people looking to create a strong environment for their future, right here on Cape Cod.

The Cape Cod Young Professionals was started in November of 2005 with help and support from Cape Business Magazine. The next scheduled events are March 30th and May 11.
